By the Abstract which accompanies this Report it will be perceived that the total expenditure on Public Works for the year 1856 amounts to the sum of £9247. 3. 11, namely:

  • On Buildings and Contingent repairs: £3292. 12. 8
  • On Roads, Contingent construction and repairs: £2292. 12. 3
  • Drains and contingent repairs: £1871. 1. 7. 3
  • On new Marine Works: £49. 46 for Convicts: £3. 3
  • On Sundry Works and contingent construction: £1781. 15. 4
  • For Garden Tools for Government House: £7. 19. 9

Buildings. The Expenditure on Buildings consists of Repairs of Supreme Court House as per Report and Estimate 18 of 1853. Considerable damage had been done to the skylight during a gale and the timbers of the roof had suffered from dry rot and the attacks of white ants which rendered necessary an outlay of £58. 17. 3.

Repairs of Post Office as per Report and Estimate 19 of 1855. The wood work of the flat roof of the kitchens on either side had become decayed and was sloped and posts substituted and damages which occurred during a gale which took place while the works were in progress were made good at an outlay of £69. 7. 0.
