Knows the necessity for such rest from work, even to those who are not exposed to the sun, will I trust admit that I am not an overpaid officer.

I may state for the information of this Excellency that on my introduction to the office everything was in the utmost confusion; most incomplete plans were in existence of Lots sold, and little information obtainable regarding them.

No designs for the town had ever been attempted by any previous officer of the Department, and the whole burden of Surveys necessary for the work devolved upon my shoulders: in such a country and with such difficulties as I had to contend with, not only in the natural irregularities of the surface of the country but with land holders themselves, many of whom were entitled to be given ground that could not be given to them, and many houses built without regard to position, line, levels or means of access except by pedestrians.

This difficult service I performed and have since that period been in active and constant work in the same service, survey of the City, for the development and in the designing of every Public Civil work (except the Government offices) executed by Her Majesty's Government.

I make this allusion to my previous service as I am about to proceed to England.
