As all Plumber's work is exceedingly difficult to have executed here it is not surprising if, such should happen, as I had no European surveyor, especially a Clerk of Works, or other person competent ..... to superintend it:

The works in the preparation of the Garden, and the much more difficult service in upholding the heavy slope at the West boundary of the grounds were carried out but not terminated without casualties; the earth became so saturated from the excessive rain fall that the slope in part gave way twice; I trust however no further slips may occur, for though the bank is far removed from the house; and is made ground, it is expensive and inconvenient to repair.

However, but it cannot injure the house itself. The services though hardly finally completed have been executed considerably within the Estimate, and do credit to Chinese work. The arching of the Verandahs is admirable though many portions of the highly finished interior are not so as I intended them to be; I have every reason to be satisfied with the execution and general ensemble both within and without. When the young trees spring up it will be vastly improved, but care and constant attention are demanded for the prevention of damage both to the grounds and plantations.
