MEASURES

English Standard Measures are employed in the Colony, and also the Chinese Measures according to the Tariff established by the Tariff.

Chinese Measures

Of Length:

  • 1 ch'ih (Chinese foot) = about 14.1 English inches
  • 10 ch'ih = 1 chang (Chinese yard) = about 11.75 English feet
  • 100 ch'ih = 1 yin = about 117.5 English feet

Of Capacity (Grain):

  • 1 sheng = 31.5 cubic inches (approx.)
  • 10 sheng = 1 tou (peck)
  • 10 tou = 1 shi (picul) = 100 sheng

Of Weight:

  • 1 liang (tael) = 1.33 ounces avoirdupois
  • 16 liang = 1 jin (catty) = 1.33 lbs avoirdupois
  • 100 jin = 1 dan (picul) = 133.33 lbs avoirdupois

Four yards = 1 chang (approx.)
