In the above table an approximation has been attempted to the actual mortality amongst the resident Chinese in Hongkong, and I have to believe that a very fair estimate has been made; at least the averages come out very much as any one accustomed to vital statistics would expect. I have never been able to discover any very striking peculiarities in the habits of the Chinese. If there be anything remarkable they resemble those of civilized nations — an Englishman were he sick in France, and his disease were pronounced by his physicians hopeless, he would naturally seek his home, that he might die amid his friends and family, and be buried in his family vault, or Parish Church yard — so with the Chinaman.
