The relative number of cases of sickness and deaths in the years 1849 and 1850 stand thus:

It appears that the sickness in 1850 was nearly one third in excess, while the mortality was fifty per cent less.
This leads me to observe that during the last four years, there has been a remission in the extent of sickness every other year, while the deaths have not corresponded with the amount of sickness. In the Police Force, the greatest mortality has resulted from sporadic diseases; and I have observed that endemic diseases have prevailed less when sporadic diseases have been most common. It is worthy of note, also, that during the years remarkable for the prevalence of the endemic remittent fever of Haugh Kong, July, August, September, October, and November have been the most unhealthy months, while in the intermediate years, they have been the least. At the same time, the number of deaths bore no relation to the prevalence of sickness.
