The only gold coins legally current, are those of the United Kingdom, and the East India Company's gold Mohur, coined since the 1st September, 1835, value £1.9.2 sterling. This latter, however, is seldom, perhaps never met with in the Colony. The silver coins, besides those of the United Kingdom, are the Dollars of Spain, Mexico, and the South American States, cash equivalent to the sterling, and the East India Company's Rupee, Half, Quarter, Eighth of Rupee, at 1/10, 1/7, 3d, and 2d respectively. Five franc pieces and Dutch Guilders, probably brought from Batavia, are occasionally found in circulation, but they are not recognized as currency.
The copper coins are the copper of Great Britain, from a Penny to a Half Farthing, all of which are current, as are also Three "Cash" of China, equal to a Half Farthing. Many...
