I am happy to say that, as the circuit of the Island will soon be complete, much of the labour alluded to will be avoided, and if the improvement and widening of these Roads is not proceeded with next year, I have good opportunities of bringing to a close many surveys only partly completed, or in executing any services in Victoria which I formerly requested might be performed by the Royal Engineer Department, such as the preparation of and the building of the Government House, which service might now be performed by my Department at a considerable saving to the Colony.
Connected with the work of the Department in the office, I cannot speak in too bright terms of praise of Mr. Tower, the accountant, whose care and attention are much to be commended; in addition to his originally deputed work, he has charge of the Record office, to which service he was appointed upon the suspension of Mr. Jassant. See this also on the 5th August. As in his other work, Mr. Power has taken considerable trouble and extra work to complete certain Services left in arrear by his predecessor.
Mr. Harrison (Clerk) as stated in my Report last year, had the greater part of his time occupied by his duties as Police Rate Assessor and Collector, much of the work formerly executed by him has been undertaken by Mr. Border.
