QUESTIONS.

Question Answer
13. Is there a Chapel in the Prison, or suitable Apartment for the performance of Religious Services? How are the Prisoners separated therein? None.
14. What Duties are performed by the Ministers for the Instruction of the Prisoners; and are they supplied with Bibles and other suitable Books? On one outer occasion the prisoners have been visited by Ministers, none of whom attend regularly; now and then at all. The Colonial Chaplain attends occasionally the European Prisoners. The Chinese have no religious instruction whatever.
15. Are Dissenting Ministers allowed to have access to the Prisoners; and, if so, at what times, and under what restrictions? Ministers of the Gospel are allowed to visit them at all times with the sanction of the Chief Magistrate, which is always given. Applications by Dissenting Ministers for this purpose are very rare.
16. What Duties are performed by the Surgeon? Are separate Buildings or Apartments provided for the Sick? The Colonial Surgeon visits the sick when required. There is no separate Apartment provided for them.
17. What Diseases have been most prevalent during the Year (in reference to Columns 10 and 11, Return No. 1)? Ulcers and Dysentery, and a few Diseases proceeding from Opium smoking.
18. Reasons for Non-employment of Prisoners (in reference to Column 8)? No reasons. (Vide Column 8.)
