Canton is going to Scentsin, and the large quantity of fresh goods finally expected were originally Fokein craft, and chartered by Shanting and other merchants. At present, the prices of our Cotton manufactures at Shanghae do not differ much in price from those of Hongkong, on account of the large importation; the speculation will not probably be repeated. The cargoes intended for northern China and Mongolia are to make covers for the shepherds and wadded jackets of the peasantry, the exclusive dress of the peasantry and poorer classes in winter, as the cheapest stuff procurable.
We have also had a few junks from Ningpo and Inhchoo on their way to Canton, and vice versa, some direct from Foochow, though belonging to Fo keen merchants. There are very few from Amoy and Swatow, and they do not bring much cargo. However, there is always some trade, though exclusively confined to the Chinese living here. As long as a bustling house exists, it is impossible to obtain accurate returns.
The above was collected from the natives on board of their vessels. The writer has frequently conversed with his expert and has investigated the import cargoes. He is anxious to investigate the subject in all its bearings, and if there happens any favorable change, he will not fail to report the same after having duly investigated the matter in all its bearings.
