22. Any penthouse or similar room in which overhead pulleys or similar machinery for any lift are housed shall-

(a) have a clear height of not less than four feet; and

(b) be provided with safe and convenient means of access and

adequate artificial lighting.

23. Every machine, pulley, governor and similar equipment com nected with any lift shall be so supported and held as to prevent it from becoming loose or being displaced.

24. (1) Every supporting beam or slab shall be of sufficient strength to support a total load calculated in accordance with para- graph (2).

(2) The total load shall be the aggregate of the weight of all apparatus resting on the beam or slab and a weight equal to twice the maximum resultant load suspended therefrom when the lift, with full rated load, is at rest.

25. (1) Every opening in a wall enclosing a liftway provided, at a lift landing, to give access to the car of a lift, shall be provided with a door.

(2) Every such door shall extend to the full height and width of the opening and shall have an FRP, of not less than one hour.

(3) Every such door shall be fitted with a locking device of such type that-

(a) the door cannot be opened unless the car is within the levelling

zone of the door; and

(b) the car cannot be kept in motion unless the door is fully closed

and locked.

(4) Provision may be made for the opening of any such door it an emergency, whether or not the car is within the levelling zone of the door.

(5) Where a vision panel is provided in any such door-

(a) the area of any one pane of glass therein shall be not more

than eighty square inches;

(b) the panel shall be glazed with wired or other approved glass,

not less than a quarter inch thick;

(c) if the area of the panel is more than eighty square inches, the width thereof shall be not more than eight inches and the height thereof shall be not more than five feet; and

(/) if such door is a sliding door, the panel shall, so far as practicable, be flush with the outer surface of the door.

26. (1) There shall be marked conspicuously on every lift the Rayed load rated load thereof,

to be clearly marked.

(2) In the case of a lift used or intended to be used wholly or mainly for carrying persons, the rated load shall be so marked in terms of the number of persons and in terms of weight.

(3) For the purposes of this regulation, every person shall bo deemed to weight one hundred and fifty pounds.

28. (1) The car of every lift shall be provided with a door or gate. Every car lo

(2) No collapsible door or gate shall be opened by mechanical power for a distance of more than a quarter of the total width of the door or gate.

(3) Every collapsible gate shall be of the close picket type and, when the gate is fully extended, the width, between members, of the openings therein shall be not more than two and a half inches.
