(1) Section 2,

SECOND COLUMN.

Section 28 is amended by the repeal of subsections (2) and (3) and the substitution therefor of the following-

(2) The Immigration Officer may in his absolute discretion require security, whether by way of deposit or otherwise, from the master, owner, charterer or agent or consignee of a vessel or aircraft, for the compliance by the members of the crew of such vessel or aircraft with the terms of any permit granted under sub- section (1) and may refuse to release the vessel or aircraft from examination until such security is furnished.

(3) No member of a crew who is an immigrant may be discharged or paid off in the Colony without the permission of the Immigration Officer.

In any instance of contravention of this subsection and in any instance of contravention by any member of a crew of the terms of a permit granted under subsection (1), the master, owner, agent or consignce shall be liable for the maintenance of the person concerned until his repatriation and for the cost of such repatriation to his place of birth or citizenship."

(1) Section 2 is amended-

(a) by the insertion after the definition of the expression "act" of a definition as follows-

"'"alien" means a person other than a person who is a British subject or a citizen of the Republic of Ireland

or a British protected person;";

(b) by the insertion after the definition of the expression "authorized place" of a defini- tion as follows-

"British subject" and "British protected person" have the meanings assigned to them by the British Nationality Act, 1948;";

(c) by the deletion of the definition of

"enabling document”.

(2) Section 3 is amended by the deletion in the fifth line of the words "a British subject" and the substitution therefor of the following-

**not an alien'.

(3) Section 4 is amended by the deletion of para- graph () and the substitution therefor of the following-

"*() being a member of a class which has been required to register under the Registration of Persons Ordinance, 1949, has failed to register and has no reasonable explanation to offer for such failure to register;".

(4) Section 5 is amended-

(a) by the deletion in the third and fourth lines of subsection (5) of the words "to be a British subject or" and the substitution therefor of the following-

"not to be an alien or claims";

(b) by the deletion in the last line of subsec- tion (6) of the words "in support of the allegations" and the substitution therefor of the following-

Provided that the alleged undesirable shall be granted any adjournment (if any) which in the opinion of the competent authority is necessary to enable him to defend himself against the allegations made and to procure the attendance of of witnesses."
