A covered concrete gauge basin was built on the outfall from the septic tank. 253 feet of 3″ wrought iron piping was laid to the Chinese and Indian Staff Quarters, and inside services installed at Block K.

3,687 electric lights, 681 power and light sockets, eighty-four ceiling fans, forty-four bells and fifty-two motors installed.

235, Wholesale Market:-This work consisted of the erection of a market on the reclamation at Kennedy Town for the wholesale trade in fresh and salt water fish and vegetables. The buildings are of one storey concrete shelters and each department has its own entrance and exit for vehicular traffic. Caretaker's quarters were provided. A contract was commenced on 15th March for the piling of the foundations by The Vibro Piling Co., Ltd., and was completed on 12th April. A contract for the buildings was let to Messrs. Tung Shan & Co. and work commenced on 19th April. The buildings were completed on 29th July and taken over by the Urban Council.

236. Temporary accommodation:-The scheme involved the demolition of the old Central Market and it was necessary to provide temporary accommodation for the stall holders. The wholesale trade in fish and vegetables was transferred to the new Wholesale Market at Kennedy Town from the South Block of the Western Market and in the latter temporary stalls were erected for the retail trade in beef, pork, fish and poultry from the old Central Market. The work was carried out during August and the old market was vacated on 31st August.

Demolition of Old Central Market:-This work is referred to in paragraph 207 of this Report.

New Central Market:-Sketch plans were prepared for a new market for retail trade only to be erected on the site of the existing market. The plans provide for a building of four stories with the main entrances for the public from Queen's Road and Des Voeux Road. A passenger lift is provided at the latter entrance and the entrances for goods are from Jubilee Street and Queen Victoria Street. On the ground floor are the poultry and fish stalls, while incorporated at this level is a separate public lavatory. On the first floor are the pork and beef stalls and on the second floor are the vegetable and fruit stalls. The third floor is allotted to offices and quarters for the Sanitary Department staff.
