VEHICLES FERRY.

233. Construction of Staging at Jordan Road:-This contract was awarded to Messrs. Cheong Kee and work was commenced in February. On the first of May, the Yaumati Ferry Company's vessel "Man Gok" collided with the staging due to an electrical fault in the steering mechanism, and extensive damage was done to the almost completed structure. All work was eventually completed in June.

NEW GAOL AT STANLEY.

Gaol Buildings:-This work was referred to in paragraph 218 of last year's Report. The main contract, heating and hot water and the boundary fence were reported completed and the payment of the retention monies was made during the year. The manufacturers in England were again late with the delivery of prison locks and by the end of the year 437 cell and gate locks were still outstanding. The buildings were inspected by His Excellency the Governor, Sir Andrew Caldecott, K.C.M.G. on 18th January and the gaol together with staff quarters was handed over to the Prisons Authorities on 19th January.

European Staff Quarters:-This work was reported as completed in paragraph 219 of last year's Report and only the payment of retention monies was required to be made during the year.

Indian and Chinese Staff Quarters, Hospital, and Mosque:-These works were reported as completed in paragraphs 220, 221 and 222 respectively of last year's Report and only the payment of retention monies was required to be made during the year.

Car Shelters:-This work consisted of the erection of two car shelters to accommodate 28 and 10 cars respectively. A contract was let to Messrs. Kin Lee & Co., on 4th August and the work was satisfactorily completed on 15th November.

Additional European Staff Quarters:-Sketch plans were prepared for a block of six flats of three rooms, one to provide accommodation for the Medical Officer as a consulting room with waiting rooms. A contract was let to Messrs. Tak Hing & Co., on 12th April for the building and good progress was made. The wood block flooring was laid by the China Import & Export Co., Ltd.; the hot water system installed by Messrs. Warren & Co., Ltd.; the asphaltic roofing laid by The Texas Co., (China) Ltd., and the metal casement doors and windows were supplied by the Hong Kong Metal Window Manufacturing Co. The work proceeded satisfactorily and was nearing completion by the end of the year.
