REPORT BY THE INSPECTORS OF ENGLISH SCHOOLS.
(a) Provided.
GOVERNMENT SCHOOLS.
1. Queen's College.-Headmaster, Mr. F. J. de Rome, M.B.E., B.Sc. During the absence on long leave of Mr. de Rome, the school was in charge of Mr. W. L. Handyside, M.A., B.Sc.
The maximum monthly enrolment was 610. The average attendance was 573 (565 in 1936).
2. In the Hong Kong School Certificate Examination conducted by the University of Hong Kong 47 boys sat, 28 gained School Certificates while 18 of these qualified for Matriculation. The Hong Kong Local Examination Syndicate held its School Certificate Examination for the first time. 85 boys sat, of these 76 gained certificates, 9 with Honours. In the rest of the School the Annual Examination results were satisfactory.
3. Seven past pupils graduated from the Hong Kong University at the end of the year.
4. A Science Society has been instituted for boys in Classes 1 and 2.
5. Physical Training and Organized Games are now compulsory.
6. King's College.-Headmaster, Mr. W. Kay, M.A. From March 6th, 1937, Mr. Kay acted as Director of Education and the school was in charge of Rev. G. E. S. Upsdell, M.A. The maximum monthly enrolment was 802. The average attendance was 750 (695 in 1936).
7. In the Hong Kong School Certificate Examination conducted by the University of Hong Kong 57 boys sat and 51 gained School Certificates. Of these 23 qualified for Matriculation. Two King Edward VII Scholarships at the University and two Government Studentships-in-Training were gained.
In the Class 2 School Certificate Examination conducted by the Local Examination Syndicate 75 boys sat, 65 passed, 5 with Honours.
8. Physical Training and Organized Games are compulsory. The School won the Government Schools Junior Football League and the Inter-Schools Volley Ball League (Small Boys Division).
