the Printing Shop, Bath House, Laundry and Assembly Hall were both completed during the year. A further two cell blocks were commenced during the early part of the year and finished by September. The completed scheme thus contains six cell blocks each containing 246 cells and one smaller cell block for European containing 24 cells thus making a total of 1,500 cells. There was some delay in the delivery of cell locks from England owing to the scarcity of skilled labour and by the end of the year only 512 had been delivered but this was improved upon during the last month with a promised delivery of 250 locks per month to follow. Tenders were obtained for the erection of a barbed wire fence with concrete posts to enclose the area of the gaol reserve and that of Messrs. Sang Tai & Co. amounting to $4,299 was accepted. This work was satisfactorily completed during the year. Messrs. Haden & Sons, Ltd. completed their contract for heating and hot water service to the prison buildings and at the end of the year tests were being made on the boilers, calorifiers and pumps.
219. European Staff Quarters:-The tender of Messrs. Tung Shan & Co. for the three houses for Senior Officers was accepted and a contract signed in February. Work proceeded satisfactorily both on this contract and that of Messrs. Tak Hing & Co. for the Subordinate Officers' Quarters. The Subordinate Officers' Quarters were completed in October and the Senior Officers' Quarters in December. The wood block floors to all of the Quarters were laid by the China Import & Export Lumber Co., Ltd., and this firm also supplied the wood doors. The hot water systems were installed by Messrs. C. E. Warren & Co., Ltd. and the asphaltic roofing was laid by Messrs. Bradley & Co., Ltd. Steel doors and windows were supplied by Messrs. Hope Crittall (China), Ltd.
220. Indian and Chinese Staff Quarters:-This work was referred to in paragraph 211 of last year's Report. The contract for this work proceeded satisfactorily and was completed on the 19th November, 1936.
221. Hospital:-Working drawings were prepared, tenders obtained and a contract was signed by Messrs. Blackmore Basto & Shank, Ltd. on 22nd January. The work proceeded satisfactorily and was completed on 14th November.
222. Mosque:-Working drawings were prepared during the year, tenders called for and a contract was let to Messrs. Sang Tai & Co. on the 23rd September. The work was satisfactorily completed on 4th December.
