Roads and Bridges (Maintenance and Improvements): The surface of approximately forty-two miles of roads was maintained in a satisfactory condition.

Particulars of the additional areas laid with improved surfacing were:-

90. Maintenance of Telephones:-The lines and instruments were maintained in good order.

100. Maintenance of Sewers, Nullahs, etc. :-Sewers, storm water drains, and trained nullahs were cleansed, repaired, and maintained in good condition. Open channels and nullahs were cleansed by the Sanitary Department. Sand deposits, as they accumulated were removed.

Electric Lighting:-The total number of electric street lamps in use at the end of the year was 558, an increase of twenty-two over the previous year.

102. Typhoon and Rainstorm Damages :-Repairs of varying magnitude were made to Government buildings. Land slips occurred in cuttings on Boundary Street, Taipo Road and Waterloo Road. Repairs were carried out to the slipway and pier surfacing at Kai Tak Airport and to pitching and access road to Kowloon City pier. Telephone poles and lines were repaired.

Sand and silt were removed from nullahs and catchpits at Lai Chi Kok, Taipo Road, Waterloo Road and Kowloon Tsai districts. Damaged nullah and parapet walling was made good.
