54. Roads and Bridges Outside City (Maintenance and Improvements):-The surfaces of approximately ninety miles of roads were generally maintained in a satisfactory manner.

The following are particulars of the additional areas laid with improved surfacing during the year:-

A traffic census was taken on some of the main roads in the Outside City district. During a twelve hour period (8 a.m. to 8 p.m.) the following results were obtained and these are shown compared with the 1935 figures.

55. Maintenance of Telephones including all Cables :- The whole system of communication including submarine and land cables and aerial routes, telegraph lines and instruments and office inter-communicating systems were maintained in good order.
