Education for the best trained troop. Some twenty schools from both sides of the harbour participated, and, after a very keen contest, the banner went to the Aberdeen Industrial School.
18. Scholarships. Thirty boys and twenty girls from various Vernacular Schools were awarded Free Scholarships tenable at Government English Schools, and four boys won scholarships tenable at the Vernacular Middle School.
PRIVATE SCHOOLS-RURAL DISTRICTS.
19. Subsidized Schools.-At the end of year, the number of Subsidized Schools was 120, being the same as in the previous year, and this includes six schools for girls. Subsidies paid out for the whole year amounted to $19,835; it worked out to an average of $165.29 per school ($162.33 in 1935). Passed students of the Taipo Vernacular Normal School are gradually filling up the teachers' places in these schools.
20. Non-Subsidized Schools.-The number of Non-subsidized Schools was 58, including six for girls. Besides these Day Schools, there are (1) a Night School for female adults in Taipo Market, and (2) a boys' English Night School in Tai O.
21. Scholarships.-Free places in the three Government Schools in the New Territories and Yaumati School were fully filled by successful candidates, but only one boy was found suitable for the scholarships tenable at King's College.
22. School Gardening. The Peel cup for rural gardens was keenly contested, the standard being surprisingly high. Indeed, the winning exhibit was so ambitious as to over-awe competitors and it is feared that, despite simplified conditions, there will be no competition next year.
23. Attendance. The maximum enrolment in Subsidized Schools was 4,781, including 583 girls (4,712 with 571 girls in 1935), and in Non-subsidized Day Schools, 2,203 including 453 girls (1,589 with 275 girls in 1935). The average attendance in Subsidized Schools was 4,034 and in Non-subsidized Schools, 1,797. The Night School for Women had an enrolment of 50, and the English Night School, 35.
24. All Schools have been inspected by an Inspector during the year.
