58. Maintenance of Praya Walls and Piers: -Praya Walls and Piers were maintained in a satisfactory condition. Repairs were carried out to the piles and superstructure of the following piers:-Blake, French Street, Green Island, Harbour Office, King Shan, Murray, Sai Wan Ho, Tonnochy Road and Wilmer Street.
Extensive replacement of the fendering of Jubilee Street pier was necessary due to the damage caused by the vehicular ferry vessels. The expenditure on the refuse boat landings was due principally to repairs of damage to the chutes caused by vessels berthing alongside. Due to the ravages of white ants, extensive repairs had to be carried out to the searching sheds at the following piers: -Chiu On, Hoi On, Kwong Wing and Luen Chong.
The searching sheds at following piers were repaired and painted:--Hing Kee, Ping On, Po Tak, Sai Kong, Tai Hing, Tung On and Yuen On.
Five hoists were maintained in good order at Jubilee Street Ferry Pier.
59. Expenditure $24,618.05
Maintenance of Public Cemetery:-The Cemeteries were generally maintained in a satisfactory condition. New paths in the Colonial Cemetery were laid with 23" granolithic paving.

Maintenance of Chinese Cemeteries:-Work carried out under this head is covered by paragraph 36 of the report.

61. Maintenance of Public Recreation Grounds: All Government playgrounds were maintained in good condition. The use of departmental labour for the purpose of mowing grass, cleansing ditches, etc. was continued.

62. Dredging Foreshores: The working cost and capacity of the two Government Grab Dredgers during the year were as follows:-
