64. The high standard of work has been maintained and very good reports have been received of pupils who have gone on to other schools.
65. Volley Ball has been introduced in Classes 7 and 8.
(b) AIDED.
66. There were, as last year, 14 Grant-in-Aid English Schools. 7 for boys and 7 for girls, with a total of 6,362 children in attendance as compared with 6,156 last year. All these schools have Secondary Departments with the exception of two girls' schools one of which is a Primary School and the other for Infants only.
67. Grants were paid at the following rates viz., $40 in respect of Boys' Schools and $35 in respect of Girls' Schools. The Annual Reports by the Inspectors of English Schools show that satisfactory work is being done, and, as in previous years, Heads of Schools invariably adopted such improved methods, syllabus and equipment as were recommended.
68. Ying Wa Boys' College receives a Grant in respect of the Primary Classes only, and a block grant of $6,000 was again made to Munsang College. Government pays an annual grant of $4,800 to St. Louis Industrial School which is conducted by the Salesian Institute.
(c) UNAIDED.
69. Day Schools. At the end of the year there were 51 day schools on the register; an increase by three over the number in the previous year. These schools include three Roman Catholic Theological Colleges (two of which are exempted from supervision) three business training institutions, one trade school, two Kindergartens, and five schools for girls; the rest are ordinary schools for Chinese boys. The maximum enrolment in these schools was 2,732 boys and 541 girls. Three boys' schools and three girls' schools had upper classes; all of them sent some of their senior students to sit for the School Certificate Examination.
70. Night Schools. These night schools attempt to teach the rudiments of English and Arithmetic to those who have to work in the day; there were 71 of them at the end of December. The maximum enrolment was 1,829.
