All pumping units and station buildings have been kept in good order and the work of overhauling the valves on the principal mains in the City was continued, ninety being repaired.

Owing to the development in the Peak District particularly at Mount Cameron, distribution difficulties were experienced and a scheme to supply the Magazine Gap and Mount Cameron locality with water from the Eastern Filter Beds was under consideration at the end of the year.

5,354 feet of piping (varying from 2"-4" in diameter) in the Peak District were cleaned or renewed.

On 31st December the following were in use:- forty-two public stand pipes, 173 pedestal fire hydrants, and 650 single underground hydrants.

With the exception of a few ball hydrants left to act as air valves, all underground hydrants are now of the spring type.

New services were constructed or old ones altered, improved, repaired or connected to the mains to the number of 6,528 and sixty-five supplies were laid for building purposes.

The number of inspections of services carried out was 15,510. Defective services were found in 506 cases, all of which were put in proper repair after the usual notices had been served.

Particulars of the quantity of water supplied by meters are given in Table VI. The amount so supplied being 2,588.20 million gallons. 66.7% of the total consumption for the year has therefore been accounted for by meters compared with 67.9% in 1983.

56. Village Water Supplies.- (a) Shaukiwan:- The supply was subjected to restrictions similar to those in force in the City of Victoria, a constant supply being maintained for 148 days during the year.

The total consumption of filtered water from the Chai Wan Filters for the year was 29.46 million gallons which includes 1.96 million gallons supplied to the boat population, equivalent to an average of 81,000 gallons per day. An unfiltered supply of 2.87 million gallons was given to the barracks at Sai Wan which along with the amount of filtered supply stated above made a total of 32.33 million gallons or 89,000 gallons per day. Details of the consumption are given in Table VIII. During the dry season, the supply was augmented from the city system.
