44. The total enrolment in the three English schools classed as "rural" was 258 and the average attendance 217. One of these schools is established at a headquarters of the local fishing fleet; and the other two at or near the two largest market towns in the New Territories.
PROVIDED SCHOOLS-VERNACULAR.
45. Three schools belong to this category. The Vernacular Middle School is a Secondary School, and the other two—the Vernacular Normal School for Women and the Taipo Vernacular Normal School—are classified as Vocational.
PROVIDED SCHOOLS-TECHNICAL INSTITUTE.
46. The Teachers' Classes held at the Technical Institute, a report of which will be found in Chapter IV, provide a useful and inexpensive opportunity for teachers to improve themselves and the quality of their teaching. The English Classes were attended by sixty-eight teachers of whom forty were men and twenty-eight women. The Vernacular Classes were attended by one hundred and ninety of whom thirty-six were men and one hundred and fifty-four women.
AIDED SCHOOLS-ENGLISH.
47. There were 6,156 children in attendance at the fourteen English schools compared with 6,104 in 1933.
48. The Ying Wa Boys' College is paid a grant in respect of the Primary Department only, although this school possesses both a Secondary and Primary Department.
49. Inspectors' Annual Reports show that very satisfactory work is being done in these schools and in all cases the maximum grants were recommended.
50. As in previous years weaknesses were discussed with the Heads of the Schools concerned who on all occasions showed themselves anxious to co-operate with the Education Department and to adopt any suggestions offered.
51. Colloquial English, one of the chief weaknesses, continues to make slow but steady improvement.
52. Grants in Aid were paid in respect of 1934 at the following rates:- $40 in respect of boys' schools. $35 in respect of girls' schools. Details of the grants will be found in Table IV.
53. A grant of $6,000 was again made to the Munsang College, Kowloon City, for the year 1934.
