7. The payment due by the conservancy contractor for Shaukiwan was also reduced. The total deduction for the year amounted to $2,080.00, the amount due under the original contract being $2,580.00 per annum.

8. Due to special circumstances the monthly payments due by the contractor for the collection and removal of blood and hair from the Kennedy Town and Ma Tau Kok Slaughter Houses were reduced from $1,072.00 and $466.00 to $797.00 and $341.00 respectively, from 1st May to the end of the year.

9. Table III gives the comparative statement of revenue and expenditure for the last ten years.

REFUSE COLLECTION AND REFUSE REMOVAL,

10. Equipment. The Department has at its disposal for refuse collection and removal 21 motor lorries (of which 14 are employed in Hong Kong and 7 in Kowloon), 2 towing tugs, 1 steam lighter, 7 deep draft and 7 light draft lighters and 5 sailing junks.

During the greater part of the year, 12 motor lorries only were available in Hong Kong. During November two new lorries were added to the fleet.

Collection. There were collected and delivered to Depots :-

(i) from City of Victoria, including Hill District and outlying residences 72,330.01 tons (all of which was collected by motor lorries, except 921.51 tons at Aberdeen and 3,685 tons at Shaukiwan, which were collected by handcarts). (ii) from Kowloon including Kowloon Tong and Kowloon City 38,013.6 tons (all of which was collected by motor lorries except 552 tons which were collected by handcarts at Kowloon). Total............ 110,343.61 tons (or 302.31 tons per day).

In addition some 854 tons of refuse were collected in rural districts (Pokfulam Village, Telegraph Bay, Aplichau and Shek O) and burnt in incinerators.
