Q 79
35. The values of Bench Marks in Kowloon and New Territories have been tabulated and indexed. It is hoped that this may also be done to the Bench Marks in Hong Kong during the year and the whole, with a description of the levelling published in pamphlet form. In the whole of these traverses corrections were applied between bench-marks and a final correction between the starting and closing points. Owing to damage it was necessary to revalue several bench-marks in the New Territories.
36. Careful records have been made of all these levels, level books indexed and cross referenced and all errors and adjustments shown in the final record book.
37. The same instrument was used as mentioned in the last report viz. Cooke, Troughton & Simms self-checking level Type No. S 113 Connolly's patent. Telescope power 30 fitted with stadia hairs. The staff was the Gayer staff 16 feet in length, in 3 sections hinged at approx. 51 and 10 feet. In practice it has been found that 16 feet is an unnecessary length even for the steep slopes experienced in this Colony if accurate work is required. The top section was removed and only the two lower sections used. New staves which have recently been ordered will be without the top section.
