Q 77
31. In the New Territories the following traverses were run- (1) Tai Tong trig. station to Ping Shan trig. station. Distance 13,000 feet. Angular misclose 0′20′′. Linear 1 in 4,300. (2) From station 9 in (1) to station 10 in "Au Tau trig. Station' (minor) to "Tai Tong trig. station" traverse. Distance 10,100 feet. Angular misclose 1'00" and linear 1 in 3,500. These miscloses are rather more than those laid down as permissible for main traverses but as they are in outlying districts this is considered satisfactory.
GENERAL.
32. Six Colony Sheets were taken up during the period under review. The 1:20000 map of Hong Kong and Kowloon (Sheet 19) was corrected and brought up to date. Various small surveys were made and plans prepared for the Police Department in connection with criminal cases. The annual perambulation of the Anglo-Chinese boundary was made for the inspection of boundary marks and repairs carried out where necessary. Departmental Regulations were published. These regulations give instructions for the carrying out of "Cadastral Surveys" and office work in connection with same.
LEVELLING.
33. It has been possible to make some progress with the levelling of the Colony but no one officer has been able to devote the whole of his time to this work. Double levelling has been carried out chiefly in the City of Victoria. Owing to the narrow streets and the congestion caused by traffic, &c. and in most cases the steep slopes, this has been by no means easy. The line of levels mentioned in para. 43 of the last report, the first portion of which is to the North of the City on more or less level ground, was taken as a base and lines run, in most cases, along streets parallel with it at higher altitudes. This was done so as to take advantage of the most favourable ground as practically all the streets running North to South are precipitous. In some cases these lines were connected by levels taken along streets running across them.
34. The following tabulated statement shows the work done.
