(Vernacular teachers) Examination were again disappointing. This may be accounted for by the high standard required and the poor quality of the candidates. Vernacular teachers as a rule are badly paid and do not readily adapt themselves to modern conditions. All other Classes showed satisfactory examination results.
3. The number of students enrolled during the year was 632. The average for the past six years is 660. The decline is more than accounted for by the reduction in numbers in the Vernacular Teachers Classes. The amount of fees received was $6,338.50 ($5,701 in 1931). The expenditure was $24,070.90 ($19,678 in 1931). The average cost per pupil was $28.06 ($20.37 in 1931). Small over-head charges and the non-maintenance of any buildings account for this low cost.
4. The death of Mr. Tsui Chim Fong in July was a sad loss. He had acted most efficiently in his spare time as Clerk to the Institute for 23 years.
