occupation by some of the workmen. Heavy rains, having saturated and loosened a dump of earth, caused a washout at about 2.30 A.M. on the morning of the 17th August, which completely buried two of the huts. Six of the occupants were killed and seven injured.

332. Cemeteries.-In connection with the general maintenance of Chinese Cemeteries and the provision of additional areas for graves, new terraces and paths were formed and sites levelled in the various Cemeteries in Hong Kong and Kowloon: existing paths, channels and nullahs were also kept in good repair throughout the year.

333. At the Cemeteries in Hong Kong the following works were carried out:

Mount Caroline-Storm water channelling was laid near the Sexton's Quarters. Terraces were formed East of Section D. Terraces and approach paths formed on new area B. Channels and paths repaired throughout.

Kai Lung Wan East-Paths and channels repaired throughout. Exhumation areas reformed,

Kai Lung Wan West-Terracing formed in the Western area.

Chai Wan-Laying out of new area for the Tung Wah Hospital started. Terraces formed.

Aplichau-Paths formed.

334. At the Cemeteries in Kowloon, the following works were carried out:-

Kowloon Central Cemeteries-Sites were levelled and sites for terraces formed. Trenches were dug and exhumation areas re-formed. Paths were formed and surfaced; channelling laid in cement concrete; nullah walls were repaired and where necessary extended. Repairs to channelling and paths throughout.

Cheung Sha Wan-Terraces were formed and areas re-formed. Channelling was formed and paths formed and surfaced.

Sai Yu Shek-Terraces and channelling were formed.

335. Reclamations.-The following is a statement of the private reclamations which were completed or in progress during the year:-
