237. New Female Prison, Lai Chi Kok. This work was referred to in paragraphs 230 and 263 of last year's report. Tenders for piling were obtained early in the year and that of the Hong Kong Excavation Pile Driving & Construction Co. for $48,387.60 for Raymond Piles was accepted. This work was commenced in March and completed in April. A Contract for the buildings and boundary wall was let in May to Messrs. Sang Lee & Co. for the amount of $166,908.24. Work was put in hand immediately and by the end of the year the buildings were nearing completion.

GENERAL WORKS.

238. Roads.—The reconditioning of Lai Chi Kok Road between Boundary Street and Peiho Street with 7" reinforced cement concrete was carried out under this heading.

239. The undermentioned roads were macadamized, kerbed, channelled and laid to approved levels, the footpaths being paved with granolithic paving slabs and the necessary improvements made in front of the new buildings erected during the year:- Apliu Street, Cheung Sha Wan Road, Fuk Wa Street, Fuk Wing Street, Haitan Street, Kweilin Street, Ki Lung Street, Kent Road, Lai Chi Kok Road, Maple Street, Nan Chang Street, Ngai Tsin Wai Road, Poplar Street, Prince Edward Road, Po Kong Road, Shek Kip Mi Road, Sa Po Road, Tai Po Road, Tak Ku Ling Road, Yu Chow Street, Wong Chuk Street, Un Chow Street, Yen Chow Street.

Expenditure $68,929.80

240. Drainage:—(a) Training Nullahs. A temporary storm-water drainage trench was cut in area north-east of N.K.I.L. 506 and east of Castlepeak Road, Cheung Sha Wan.

(b) Miscellaneous Drainage Works.-A total length of 15,471 feet of sewage and storm water drains varying from 6" to 81″ in diameter were laid during the year, principally in Shamshuipo and Kowloon City. The number of drain connections made was 463. Many new gullies were constructed and connected to the stormwater drainage system.

241. Miscellaneous. The following were the principal works executed under this head:-Lai Chi Kok Prison,-installation of a hot water system to Indian Warders Quarters, prisoners' bath-house and washhouses; a general survey of the district North West of the Kai Tak Airport and concreting the pickets marking the principal survey stations.
