line at Mile 16, for General Li Fuk Lam, amounting to $494.28 was included. The receipts under this sub-head are however $3,801.62 less than 1928, as the repairs to Chinese Section rolling stock were completed early in the year.
80. The income from Rents fell to $5,651.75 as compared with $7,728.57 during 1928, as several lots of land were vacated.
81. The foreign passenger receipts were $379,225.13 as against $307,936.39, an increase of 23.15%, and the goods earnings $37,076.89, or $6,495.81 less, as the goods traffic between Canton and Kowloon did not come up to expectations, that from Canton being very light indeed.
82. The increase in the passenger traffic may be attributed to the increasing popularity of the rail route between Kowloon and Canton. The number of passengers carried both ways were greater than the previous year, although through trains were suspended for 37 days during 1929, and only 9 in 1928.
83. The revenue under sub-head Foreign Haulage, account of British Section locomotives hauling express trains over the Chinese Section, amounted to $117,633.92 against $127,225.52 in 1928. Interchange of Rolling Stock representing payments by the Chinese Section to the British Section for Short Supply of Rolling Stock, Demurrage, etc., amounted to $2,042.49, or $15,933.89 less than the previous year. As the major portion of the Chinese Section rolling stock was overhauled in 1928, that Section was in a better position in 1929 to meet its requirements in connection with the through service.
84. The total Operating Expenses amounted to $751,977.35. The salaries of the Junior Clerical Staff were as usual not provided for in the Railway estimate of Working Expenses, but grouped with those of other Government departments under the head of Junior Clerical Service. This item is however included in the total Operating Expenses, as are all Railway expenses whether provided for in the Railway estimate otherwise.
85. The disbursements against the estimate of Working Expenses amounted to $633,091.64, including Running Expenses of Government Motor Cars and Lorries and the salaries of the Junior Clerical Service $27,219.91: The portion of Special Expenditure chargeable to Revenue was $7,450.85. Further items amounting to $32,371.02 were included in respect of services rendered and materials supplied by other Government departments, also payments made by Railway not provided for in the Railway estimates but charged to Government votes.
86. The work of supervision of Government Motor Cars and Lorries at Kowloon being attached to the Railway, the vote is included in the Railway estimate of Other Charges, merely as a convenience, but this item is not included in the Revenue expenditure.
