The whole stock of Mauritius Palm (Chrysalidocarpus lutescens) and other foliage plants in the plant houses were repotted as required.
Very large numbers of seedlings and young plants from cuttings or layers were raised in the Pot Nursery for stock and sale purposes.
The total number of trees, shrubs and other plants sold during the year was 1,475, of these 909 were the ordinary Maiden-hair Ferns.
A number of old paths and channels of different materials in both gardens were broken up and relaid with cement granite, this has very much improved the appearance and storm water is now carried away by the enlarged channels where formerly it washed over and damaged lawns and beds. The granite steps at the Albany entrance were lifted and relaid.
Grass caterpillars were not numerous during the year and the damage done by them was slight.
Cases of damage to plants and petty thefts were unfortunately numerous, a number of schoolboys detained for petty theft were suitably punished by their parents; 9 adults were charged and dealt with at the Police Court, in one case a fine of $50 was inflicted.
Government House Grounds.-Undergrowth on the north side of the grounds was closely cut several times during the year.
All grass banks, trees, shrubs and flower beds were given such attention as they required.
Lawns were regularly top-dressed and kept in good order generally; earthworms and grass caterpillars were dealt with in the usual manner.
The interior of the house was decorated with palms and flowering plants on June 3rd, the Birthday of His Majesty the King, and on January 9th and 30th.
Mountain Lodge Grounds. Trees, shrubs and grass banks were given such attention as they required.
Undergrowth in the valley was closely cut twice during the year.
Grass lawns were kept in good order generally.
The red Azaleas (Rhododendron indicum) and Hydrangea hortensia made a fine show of colour during the spring and summer months.
