On account of the high tenders received for the annual maintenance contract of 1924, the whole of the maintenance of sewers, nullahs, etc., was carried out departmentally.
A number of old disused drains was destroyed and filled in.

88. Electric Lighting, Shamshuipo.-The number of electric lamps in use at the end of the year, of which all are incandescent was 107, an increase of 45 as compared with the previous year.
89. Maintenance of Chinese Cemeteries. The work carried out under this heading has already been alluded to in paragraph 37 of this report.

90. Typhoon and Rainstorm Damages -The heavy rains referred to in paragraph 61 of this report caused slight damage to the macadamised and decomposed granite surfacing, walling and embankments. No serious damage was recorded.
The reinforced cement concrete path to the Police Station, and the rebuilding of a brick wall at the Island Quarters, Taipo, were completed during the early part of the year. These works arose in connection with the typhoon of August, 1923.
91. Maintenance of Water Works, Laichikok-The total quantity of water supplied during the year amounted to 152.88 million gallons, which is a decrease of 8.40 million gallons over 1923, or an average consumption of 417,000 gallons per day.
Temporary water-boat supplies were in force at Queen's Pier from the beginning of the year till 2nd May, 1924, and at the Praya East from 7th December, 1924, till the end of the year; a total of 19.8 million gallons was supplied from these sources.
Details of consumption are given in Annexe J. There were 23 meters in use at the close of the year.
