85. Maintenance of Roads and Bridges.
Improvements to Roads and Bridges Approximate mileage 691. The roads generally were maintained in a satisfactory manner.
The following were particulars of the additional areas laid with improved surfacing during the year :-

86. Maintenance of telephones :-The lines and instruments were maintained in good order, and three new telephones were installed.
Eight bell and buzzer systems were installed in various Government Buildings.
Wooden poles were replaced by iron ones on various routes, and old G.I. wire line renewed.
A railway level crossing alarm system was installed at Tai Po, and another at Sha Tin.
All the telephone and electric signalling apparatus on the British Section of the Kowloon-Canton Railway was maintained in good condition.
All the alarm telephones on the frontier were kept in good order.
87. Maintenance of Sewers, Nullahs, &c.—The sewers and the trained nullahs at Shamshuipo, and the nullahs and the concrete channels in Kowloon City, were cleansed, repaired and maintained in good condition.
