50. Maintenance of Roads and Bridges outside City. Improvements to Roads and Bridges outside City Approximate mileage 72 – The roads generally were maintained in a satisfactory manner.

The erection of fence walls to protect dangerous bends on the road around the Island (referred to in paragraph 49 of last year's Report) was continued.

Stubbs Road, from the junction of Mount Kellet Rd to the Peak Hotel, was surfaced with "macadam" to admit of its use for motor traffic, and a turning place constructed. South of the chair coolie shelter,

An improvement to Stubbs Road was connected opposite I.L. 2314 by cutting away the bank and opening out a dangerous bend.

The following are particulars of the improved surfacing introduced on a number of roads in addition to those mentioned in previous reports:

51. Maintenance of telephones including all cables :—The lines and instruments were maintained in good order. A new ten-pair submarine cable was laid between Hongkong and Kowloon, and the old ten-pair submarine cable between North Point and Hung-hom was picked up and relaid in the new Cable Reserve.

The submarine cable between Stonecutters Island and Taikok-tsui broke down, but it was taken up and repaired.

Two 25-pair telephone cables were laid from the Praya-wall at Star Ferry to Post Office basement.
