Slaughter Houses; construction of reinforced cement concrete water tank at the Caine Road Quarters for the Police (Western Block); alterations to supper room and ante-room at Government House; general repairs, alterations and improvements to offices previously occupied by Messrs. Little, Adams & Wood for use as such by the Architectural, Crown Lands and Survey and the Stores Sub-departments; renewal to 2 class-room floors on ground floor at the Sai-yingpun School: sundry improvements to Villa “Miramere”, and connecting the drainage system with the main recently laid; erection of simplex partition at the Botanical and Forestry Department Offices; new doors to Garage and erection of Petrol Store at the Eastern District Sanitary Office; latrines on the first floor, Central Market; new entrance and reinforced cement concrete bridge to the lower building of the Peak Chair Coolie Quarters: alterations and improvements in connection with the housing of Chinese Revenue Officers at the Imports and Exports Office: and the construction of arms grille at the Pokfulam Police Station.

Many other improvements of a minor nature were effected to various Government Buildings.

The total expenditure under the vote amounted to $71,649.52,

48. Maintenance of Lighthouses. The Lighthouses were painted and colour-washed according to programme and otherwise maintained in good order at a cost of $7,97.67.

49. Maintenance of Road and Bridges in City. Improvements to Roads and Bridges in City. A mileage 61.-The road surfaces were maintained generally in a satisfactory condition. The asphaltum treatment of carriageways was still further extended throughout the City, and granite setts laid in the carriageways in those portions of the City where the increasing traffic rendered such paving desirable.

The following figures show the extent of the operations carried out at the Government Quarry during the year:-

Stone. Various grades passed through crushers :-

A total quantity of 24,123 cubic yards, of which 5,266 cubic yards were made into tar macadam, 4,129 cubic yards into sand carpeting, and 14,728 cubic yards were delivered to various works as the material came from the crushers. Further, 49,236 granite paving slabs for use in footways; 749 reinforced concrete standards 3' 8" in height for railings and fencing; 63 reinforced concrete piles varying from 40 to 47 feet in length; and 402 flat roofing and 481 roll tiles for the Queen's Pier were made,
