Annexe E.

Sir, I have the honour to report on the condition of steam and motor driven appliances of the Fire Brigade for year ending 1921.

No. 1 Fire Float,

This float has been on regular duty for 11 years.

The hull, boilers and machinery of this craft were thoroughly overhauled during the year and all necessary repairs carried out. Trials were taken of engines and pumps and all found to be in good running order. To facilitate manoeuvering of vessel the steering and engine room telegraph gear was transferred from main deck to a position on newly constructed navigating bridge.

While undergoing overhaul the presence of white ants was detected in forward cabin; to prevent this danger from spreading - as far as possible - soft wood bulkhead and ship side lining were dispensed with, ceiling wood renewed and treated with a preservative compound. This cabin has been extended, taking in space formerly occupied by hose locker, there were also two bunks installed for use of Europeans. Provision was made for stowage of hose, etc., under new bridge.

No. 2 Fire Float.

This float has been on duty for 15 years. The hull, engines and pump have been inspected in order to compile repair list for annual overhaul and found in good order. I am unable to make comment on internal condition of boiler until annual overhaul takes place early next year.

Land Steamers.

No. 2 Aberdeen Fire Float.

During the year the hull of this float, machinery and boiler have been overhauled and all parts placed in good running order. Subsequent pumping trials have affirmed same.
