of such areas were obliterated in laying out the course, which included a large area of Crown land, and as confusion was likely to arise owing to areas held under different forms of tenure being merged together without any distinctive boundaries, it was considered advisable for Government to refund to the Golf Club the sum expended ($9,182.82), thus enabling the entire area of the links to be let under one form of tenure. The Golf Club continue to pay the Crown rent formerly paid by the villagers for the cultivated areas and also pay 4% on the sum expended by Government in acquiring such areas.
In addition to the sum of $9,182.82 already mentioned, a further sum of $434.25 was drawn for disbursement for compensation purposes, but the amount of $19.60 was subsequently refunded to the Treasury on account of one claim remaining unpaid, namely, Lot No. 1519, District No. 92, thus bringing the expenditure for the year to $9,597.47. In 1913, a sum of $11,151.31 was expended on land resumed for the Golf Courses at Fan Ling (vide paragraph 148 of last year's Report).

158. Range (30-yards) above Kennedy Road.—The construction of this work was undertaken for the Hongkong Volunteer Corps. Three alternative designs were submitted for approval and a Contract for the work was let in March. The range was in general use in November. In addition to the range and butts, a reinforced concrete shelter, 24′ 0″ × 10′ 0″, supported on brick piers, and a store, 10′ 0″ × 6′ 3″, were provided. An approach path was formed to the range from Kennedy Road. The cost of the work, amounting to $2,030.20 was defrayed from Volunteer funds.
159. Blake Garden Trough Closet.--In connection with the sale of Inland Lot 2,048 to the Chinese Young Men's Christian Association, referred to in paragraph 7 of last year's Report, arrangements were made for the removal of the public latrine constructed in 1900 at the intersection of Bridges Street and Tank Lane, the purchasers of the lot contributing the sum of $9,000 for the erection of a new latrine on another site. A new site near the north-east corner of Blake Gardens was selected, the level of the gardens being sufficiently above the level of the adjoining street to admit of the structure being underground. On this site, a trough closet, containing 40 seats, 2 trough urinals and a small store, has been erected, the work being nearly completed at the close of the year. The back and two end walls, which act as retaining walls, are of lime concrete and the front wall is of Canton red brick in lime mortar pointed in cement mortar. The roof is of ferro-concrete and is covered over with earth and turf so as to render the structure invisible from the gardens. Light and ventilation are provided by six windows, filled in with glass louvres. Electric light is provided for lighting the structure by night. The water for flushing purposes is derived from a storm-water drain in Peel Street. The expenditure to the end of the year amounted to $3,716.54.
