Arrangements were made to obtain a supply of water for the trough-closets from a storm-water drain in Peel Street and the necessary piping for this had been laid by the close of the year.

101. Hill District School. --A Contract for the formation of the site for this building was let to Messrs. Kang On & Co. in June and was completed in November. It included a diversion of Gough Hill Road, to effect which a projecting tongue of land hitherto belonging to the Government Villas had to be cut away, the approach path to the Villas being diverted. These works and the formation of the site involved the construction of a considerable amount of retaining walls.

A Contract for the construction of the school building was let to Messrs. Sang Lee & Co. in December and the necessary preliminary works and the excavation of trenches for the foundations were begun before the close of the year.

102. Civil Hospital Improvements:

"A" Block--Concrete floors and tiling. The floors of the verandahs on the ground and first storeys on the south side of the building, which were in a worn-out condition, were removed and replaced with cement concrete, which was reinforced in the case of the upper floor. The floors were finished with encaustic tiles similar to those laid last year (vide paragraph 118 of last year's Report). The expenditure on this item was $3,272.07.

"B" & "C" Blocks--New fireplaces.--The old grates and overmantels were removed and replaced with new grates, teak-wood overmantels and tiled hearths similar to those fitted in 1913 (vide paragraph 118 of last year's Report). The expenditure on this item was $1,169.79.

103. Public Latrines and Urinals:

(4.) Underground Trough Closet in D'Aguilar Street.---A Contract for this work was signed on the 5th March. The site of the convenience, which is underground, is at the junction of Wing Wah Lane with D'Aguilar Street, entrance being gained by a flight of steps entered from Wing Wah Lane. At the end of the year, the main structure was completed, the troughs and partitions were in position and the work generally was nearing completion.
