MARINE SURVEYOR'S OFFICE.

During the year, 1908, the total number of vessels surveyed for Passenger Certificate and Bottom Inspection were 184 of 423,470 gross register tons, a decrease of 8 vessels and 8,235 tons, as compared with the previous year. Of these vessels 90 were surveyed for Bottom and Passenger Certificate at Kowloon Docks, 30 at Cosmopolitan, 19 at Aberdeen, and 12 at the new Taikoo Dock, the first vessel to be examined at the latter dock, being the British s.s. "Huichow" on the 5th October. 3 vessels were examined on Chinese owned slips and the remainder had either been granted docking certificates at this port in the previous year or were surveyed in the harbour for Passenger Certificate, without docking, on docking certificates granted at Shanghai, &c.

The nationalities and tonnage of these vessels were as follows:

British, 126 vessels of 319,312 tons German, 40 74,293 Chinese, 6 12,254 Norwegian, 5 9,682 French, 1 1,620 Swedish, 1 vessel of 6,309

Emigration surveys were held on 49 British and 51 Foreign steamers, as compared with 45 British and 70 Foreign in the previous year, while 254 surveys were held on licensed passenger launches, an increase of 27 over 1907.
