Paraitis The sum that appears under

the head of Crown Rent includes only what was paid up to July, 1844 without taking into account the rent due at that time from the

Chinese whose lots were not defined or ascertained by the Land Committee that sat in January 1844. It has consequently taken

considerable time to determine the rate at which they should be assessed, and the tenure on which

they should hold the very pieces of ground they in general occupy.
