observe that these have not yet been formally sanctioned by Her Majesty.
As I observe that no person is entered under the head of Foreign Consuls, I may here state, that an American Consul was resident here in the early part of last year, but that he subsequently died of cholera at Macao, and has not yet been replaced.
With reference to the population of the Colony, we have the satisfaction to observe that the European portion has considerably increased during the past year, and that a large influx of females has taken place. The materials for a census have not yet been obtained, but I trust the deficiency will be supplied on future occasions. As regards the Chinese population, the Return contained in this Blue Book, was the work of Mr. Gutzlaff.
