technical skills. Bruce LEE films were unique in style, interwoven with philosophic thinking and a Chinese cultural heritage. If we decide to set up a gallery for him, we are paying tribute to a master of his time and we are attracting people from everywhere to Hong Kong to visit it. It will be beneficial to the image of Hong Kong. So, I hope Members will support the original motion. Thank you, Mr. Chairman.

MR. KAM NAI-WAI (in Cantonese):—I think all of us here today have seen a Bruce LEE film and I believe everyone is to a certain degree influenced by Bruce LEE. I do not think the amendment moved by the Democratic Party seeks to disapprove of the work of Bruce LEE. You have heard members of the Democratic Party and they all commended Bruce LEE on his contribution to films and Chinese martial art. On whether Bruce LEE was a perfect man, I think history will decide and we should not lash out personal criticism on this occasion. However, I would like to respond to several points of worry raised by fellow Members. In particular, I want to discuss Mr. IP Kwok-chung's viewpoint on the effect of turning the memorial gallery for Bruce LEE to one for stars of kungfu type films.

First of all, I do not think the change will diminish Bruce LEE's reputation. The Democratic Party pointed out in the amendment that Bruce LEE was undeniably a leading figure in the development of kungfu films in the seventies and eighties. We repeated that point in the amendment. If we are really to set up a gallery for stars of kungfu films, I am sure Bruce LEE will be among those on the honoured list.

Secondly, a fellow Member said that without the memorial gallery for Bruce LEE in the Film Archive, even if we set up a gallery for stars of kungfu films, we will not be able to attract tourists. I oppose that view. Besides Bruce LEE, there are many other stars of the kungfu film industry. Many Members just mentioned Jackie Chan as one. If we honour all those stars of relevance to kungfu films in the gallery, we attract more tourists to Hong Kong in addition to Bruce LEE fans.

Thirdly, I have to ask if we are planning to set up other stars galleries in future such as one for song and dance films. Anyone in the world will support the view that kungfu films originated from Hong Kong. We think of Hong Kong when we speak of kungfu films. Hong Kong made kungfu films are on top of the world in uniqueness. Hong Kong produced the majority of kungfu films in China, in South East Asia and in the world. Therefore, I think it is appropriate to single out kungfu films and put them in focus. I hope everyone will support the amendment.

A Member has just proposed to defer this issue for discussion at the Select Committee. I think we have debated this adequately. Members may differ in opinion over a memorial gallery for one individual or one for kungfu type films, but I feel we have discussed the issue fully at this meeting and there is no
