PROVISIONAL URBAN COUNCIL

The motion was carried unanimously.

613

CHAIRMAN (in Cantonese):--The next item to be discussed is a motion moved by Mr. Wu Chi-wai. Would Mr. Wu Chi-wai move the motion and speak?

(3)(a) Mr. WU Chi-wai moved the following motion:—

'Since Hong Kong films have been persistently blossoming at home and abroad, RESOLVED that in order to pay high tribute to film workers, the Council identify suitable sites for setting up a Walk of Stars and a Hong Kong Film Industry Hall of Fame and that organizations with wide representation and credibility in the trade should be entrusted with the task of considering proposals and making recommendations for selecting suitable persons for inclusion in the Walk and the Hall.'

He said (in Cantonese):—Mr. Chairman, as an art industry, films have been enthusiastically promoted by the Council. Initiatives taken by the Council include the organization of the Hong Kong International Film Festival, the loan of venue for staging the Hong Kong Film Awards Presentation Ceremony and the construction of the Hong Kong Film Archive. The purpose is to enhance the public's enjoyment of watching films through the Council's efforts. In fact, apart from those by Hollywood, film productions of Hong Kong are also excellent. Film workers of high calibre, including directors, actors, martial arts choreographers, screenwriters and cameramen have emerged.

Recently, many elites in front of and behind the scenes are going overseas one after another to further develop their careers. It can be seen that influential local film workers are gradually exerting their influence in the international arena. Although the Hong Kong film industry is in the doldrums, its status is not affected at all. Now that the Hong Kong Film Archive is nearing completion. I move this motion in the hope that we can, from other perspectives, give due recognition to those who have contributed to the film industry in Hong Kong.

Fellow Members, before I move this motion, I have presented my proposal in writing to the Hong Kong Film Directors Guild (HKFDG), which has held a meeting to discuss it. The HKFDG has made a positive response and agreed to our concepts. As far as I know, the Hong Kong Tourist Association (HKTA) has also suggested to the HKFDG that a Walk of Stars be constructed outside the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. I have just learned that this proposal will be submitted to the Council's Culture Select Committee (CUL S/C) for discussion in the near future. So, either from the perspective of increasing the number of tourist spots, attracting more tourists, giving due recognition to film workers or recording their contributions to the development of the film industry in Hong Kong, there is the same rationale
