was undertaken by the Parks and Recreation Department (PRD) under the Ministry of National Development. In July 1996, the two organizations merged into one, with PRD being absorbed into NPB.

Under the National Parks Act, the reconstituted NPB is now commissioned to:

develop, manage and promote national parks and nature reserves for the four grand objectives, namely recreation, conservation, research and education; and

develop, upgrade, manage, and maintain public parks and open spaces on behalf of the Government.

(ii) The Organization of NPB

NPB is a statutory body which enjoys a high degree of autonomy in financial and staff management. It comprises two departments under which there are seven divisions. The organization structure of NPB is as follows:
