involvement clean-up campaign in Central District, under which cleansing activities are organised on Sundays on a regular basis in Central.
As regards the Public Toilet Refurbishment Programme, refurbishment works for 42 public toilets commenced in 1998, 22 of which have been completed. The Clean Public Toilets Competition is now in full swing and there is very active participation from the public.
Markets and Street Traders
While continued improvements were being made to the existing market facilities, the new UC Ap Lei Chau Complex with market and cooked food centre facilities was commissioned for use this month to meet the needs of the Ap Lei Chau residents.
The implementation of the Itinerant Hawker Licence (IHL) Compulsory Deletion Policy was re-affirmed in April 1997 and an interim measure to reprovision the remaining IHL-holders was endorsed by the Standing Committee of the Whole Council.
Recreation and Sports
The St. Stephen's Beach Water Sports Centre, the first of its kind in the urban area, was commissioned for use in 1998.
On district recreational and sports activities, the Council still aims at promoting "Sports-for-all". It provides a great diversity of recreational and sports activities to encourage participation, which may enrich leisure time and improve the quality of life. Last year, the Council organised a total of 9,956 recreational and sports activities, attracting some 656,700 participants.
Libraries
The Council is committed to enhancing the use of Information Technology in public libraries. Additional workstations have been provided in the libraries.
Museums
Last year, the Council continued to organise exhibitions and various promotional activities in museums. The "National Treasures - Gems of China's Cultural Relics" and the "Egyptian Treasures from the British Museum” are very successful exhibitions organized by the Council.
Culture and Arts
The Council continued to present a rich diversity of quality cultural programmes to the people of Hong Kong. To give local artists more exposure, over 70% of the programmes presented last year were performed by local artists.
