III. QUESTIONS

(1) MR. WU CHI-WAI asked the following question (in Cantonese):-

(a) How many pedestrian subways are there within the Council area at present?

(b) Does the responsibility for cleansing pedestrian subways rest with the Urban Services Department? If yes, what are the detailed arrangements for the cleansing work?

(c) Does the Department only sweep these subways but not wash them regularly? If yes, why is the cleansing procedure for pedestrian subways not the same as that for roads and streets in general? If no, what is the procedure for washing the subways?

(d) In view of the difficulty of washing pedestrian subways, would the Department procure relevant equipment for regular washing work?

Mr. Joseph CHAN YUEK-sut, CHAIRMAN OF THE Public Health Select COMMITTEE, replied as follows (in Cantonese):-This is a 4-part question which concerns the cleansing of pedestrian subways in the Council area.

The Council area covers 58 pedestrian subways-13 in Hong Kong Island and 45 in Kowloon.
