HONG KONG PROVISIONAL URBAN COUNCIL

our policies and arrangements should be more flexible to suit the needs of the tourist industry, such as keeping the tourist agencies informed well in advance so that they may make early publicity.

The use of the Internet is not something recommended by the Hong Kong Tourist Association. I don't think Mr. PAO has taken part in the Information Technology Sub-Committee. I proposed in the Sub-Committee that when the URBTIX was to be reformed, booking through the Internet must be incorporated. This kind of service is available in the major cultural facilities of all metropolises. Through the Internet I was able to book tickets for the Singapore Film Festival, but Hong Kong is so far the only place without this facility. Having lagged behind considerably, we must work even harder to catch up in this area. Apart from meeting the needs of overseas visitors, more importantly it would suit the convenience of the people of Hong Kong. Again there is absolutely no contradiction.

Mr. Chairman, I therefore hope that Members will support the original motion. While I appreciate the rationale behind the amended motion, I object to the motion. Thank you, Mr. Chairman.

Mr. PAO Ping-wing's amended motion was put to the vote.

The amended motion was carried with 17 for, 3 against and 1 abstention.

(The record of voting on Mr. PAO Ping-wing's amended motion is at Annex VI)
