HONG KONG PROVISIONAL URBAN COUNCIL
and the Coca-Cola Bottlers placed advertisements with the Council and co-sponsored some youth development programmes. The reason is none other than the good and healthy image that the Council enjoys. We must stress that we have to actively support the concerted efforts of commercial organizations and the Council in moving ahead. There are many public bodies around which have placed appropriate advertisements in municipal facilities.
In fact, before putting forth the motion, I had considered the problem of the details of implementation. Why is there a need for examination? Actually the Department is spending a lot of money on advertisements every year. A lot of advertisements are being put up in MTR stations and their exits and entrances, and with public bodies, public transportation means, radio channels, televisions etc. If the motion is carried, we should as a matter of priority consider placing our advertisements in our own places. Advertisements which are becoming to the Council's complexes should also be handled with priority. At the beginning of my speech I mentioned that there is a large electronic advertisement board at the entrance of the cross-harbour tunnel opposite to the Hong Kong Coliseum. An advertisement is being displayed there and I can assure Members that there is absolutely no problem with the advertisement space there. As for the selection, I consider that our colleagues in the Urban Services Department should liaise with the advertisers about analysing the contents of the advertisement concerned. I have full confidence in them. Hence, if we set up an ad hoc group to follow up on the issue, as Mr. Chan Choi-hi and other Members mentioned just now, I will consider it my obligation to serve on it.
Lastly, Mr. Chairman, I thank again Members for actively supporting this motion and providing valuable comments. Thank you, Mr. Chairman.
Chairman (in Cantonese):—Good. Let us now first vote on Mr. Daniel To's amended motion. Would Members please vote with the computers?
