HONG KONG URBAN COUNCIL

The second question by Ms. WONG is a suggestion for an opinion poll. It will be considered.

Mr. Wong KING-CHEUNG (in Cantonese):—Mr. Chairman, I would like to comment on paragraphs 13 to 15 of the reply document. In paragraph 12, the grade of staff to check fitness equipment daily was asked. The answer addressed checks by staff at sports venues. In fact, there have been reflections from the districts that there is a lot of defective fitness equipment but no one repairs them. In cases of loose screws on the equipment, no one seems to have noticed. For these details, I would like to know which grade of staff of indoor games halls checks fitness equipment in fitness rooms daily. Also, how long does it take from starting to replace equipment to completion of maintenance?

Ms. GRACE AU YUK-HAR (in Cantonese):—Mr. Wong's first question is about the grade of staff responsible for checking equipment. I cannot for now say which grade, but I can say for sure they are staff of indoor games halls. I share the feeling that some of them may not be in full grasp of maintenance work. The usual practice is for maintenance contractors to handle. As for individual cases, if Mr. WONG can specify, then we can follow up.

The second question asks how long it takes to replace equipment. It depends on whether we are short of the required parts and the degree of damage. If a required spare part is out of stock, it may take longer. It is hard to generalise.

MR. CHAN CHOI-HI (in Cantonese):—I got my Gold Card recently, which was issued by the Hong Kong Park. My experience concurs with the reflection from a member of the public that the fitness equipment there is outdated. Many of the pieces are very worn out too. I had intended to use 10 pieces of equipment, but I could only use 8 because 2 were reported damaged. How should we follow up on this? Do fellow Members all have Gold Cards?

Ms. GRACE AU YUK-HAR (in Cantonese):—Mr. CHAN's first question concerns the large number of damaged fitness equipment in the Hong Kong Park. We will face up to it squarely and carry out a full inspection as soon as possible. I believe maintenance is an important part of this. If equipment is frequently used by the public at certain venues, the utilisation rate will be high. Centrally located venues near housing estates are more popular. The equipment provided at new venues are invariably more advanced. I recently visited Mr. LEE Kwok-keung's constituency. Fung Tak Indoor Games Hall is pretty and new, but few people use the equipment there. I think we should step up publicity in this respect.

As for the second question on whether all Members are Gold Card holders, it is a personal question. I do not have a Gold Card, but I know how to use the equipment. The Chairman of the Urban Council has his Gold Card. It is a good question by Mr. CHAN. I appeal to Members here to take the fitness test
