HONG KONG URBAN COUNCIL

ADDRESS BY CHAIRMAN

CHAIRMAN (in English): Ladies and Gentlemen, may I call the meeting to order. Before the commencement of the meeting, it is my honour to congratulate three Councillors who are on the Queen's Birthday Honours List. Mrs. Eleanor LING on being awarded an O.B.E. (applause), Ms. YEUNG KAM-CHUN an M.B.E. (applause) and Miss Cecilia YEUNG, the Badge of Honour (applause).

MINUTES

The minutes of meeting held on 10 May 1994 were confirmed.

PAPER

The Report to the Urban Council by the Secretary, Urban Council, for the month of May 1994 was laid on table.

QUESTIONS

(1) MR. IP KWOK-CHUNG, on behalf of Ms. ANNA TANG KING-YUNG, asked the following question (in Cantonese): At present, students are charged full rate for using Urban Council tennis courts. Is this practice inconsistent with the concessionary rate policy applicable to other Council venues and facilities? Furthermore, in view of the shortfall in the existing provision, are there plans to build more tennis courts to meet public demand?

MR. RONNIE WONG MAN-CHIU, CHAIRMAN OF THE RECREATION SELECT COMMITTEE, replied as follows (in Cantonese): This question is in two parts. The first part concerns the charging policy for students using Council tennis courts, and the second part asks about the planned provision of Council's tennis courts.

On the first part, the policy on charging students when they use Council's tennis courts is consistent with that for the use of indoor games halls and squash courts. Full-time students are allowed to pay half the normal rates when they use these facilities during non-peak hours. Such concession will also apply to the use of the camping facilities as from 1 August 1994. The Department is also considering extending the same concession for the use of bowling greens, obstacle golf courses and swimming pools, and will put forward their recommendation for Council's consideration when the review is completed. No concession however is given to students when they use Council's sports facilities during peak hours. This arrangement is considered fair and reasonable to the tennis-playing public in general.

On the second part of the question, the Council plans to build another 52 tennis courts within the next five years. The Department will continue to monitor the usage of tennis facilities with a view to introducing adjustments, if needed, to meet public demand.
